Background of the Study
Network management is critical for maintaining the functionality, efficiency, and security of university networks. As universities rely on digital systems for teaching, research, and administrative activities, network performance, uptime, and security are paramount. Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, provides a complex network environment that supports a wide range of academic and non-academic services. However, effective network management practices are essential to ensure that the university’s network infrastructure operates at optimal performance, with minimal disruptions (Musa et al., 2024).
Good network management encompasses the monitoring, configuration, optimization, and security of network devices, ensuring that all components work together efficiently and securely. It also involves maintaining network availability, preventing downtime, and identifying issues before they affect the users. In an academic institution, poor network management can lead to significant disruptions in learning, research, and communication.
This study will evaluate the network management practices in place at Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, to identify strengths and weaknesses and suggest improvements for optimizing the university’s network operations.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, faces challenges in managing its network infrastructure, which leads to occasional network downtimes and performance degradation. There is a need for an evaluation of current network management practices to improve overall efficiency and ensure reliable network service delivery.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the current network management practices at Federal University, Lafia.
To identify areas of improvement in network management that could enhance performance and security.
To propose best practices for effective network management in the university.
Research Questions
What network management practices are currently implemented at Federal University, Lafia?
How effective are these practices in ensuring the smooth operation of the university’s network?
What recommendations can be made to enhance network management at Federal University, Lafia?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will evaluate the network management practices within Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State. The scope is limited to the university's local area network (LAN) and does not include broader external network connections. The study is also limited to administrative and academic network services.
